20 Ways to Be a Generous Blogger

“[A] gift is something that is given. You don’t own it. The world does. The world is asking you to use it. You don’t get to say no, no matter how much you may want to.”

Friday is Have Fun, Do Good's 6th anniversary, and my 42nd birthday.  After six years of blogging, and teaching others how to blog, I've been playing around with the idea of what it means to be a "generous blogger."

 The generous blogger . . .
  1. Sees her blog as a way to serve.
  2. Commits to sharing her gifts and talents through her blog regularly.
  3. Writes posts that are of service to her reader.
  4. Uses her blog stats to figure out how she can create more posts of value for her reader.
  5. Writes posts that make her heart sing.
  6. Is mindful of her time online.
  7. Is mindful of her reader’s time online.
  8. Reads other blogs as often as she would like to be read.
  9. Loves her blog just as it is, and doesn't compare it with other blogs.
  10. Is grateful for her readers no matter how many, or few there are.
  11. Appreciates other blogs as they are, and doesn’t judge.
  12. Mentors new bloggers.
  13. Practices "link love" weekly.
  14. Leaves love notes in other blogs’ comments.
  15. Shines a spotlight on other people's work through interviews, profiles, guest posts, and mentions.
  16. Writes about others as she would like to written about.
  17. Makes it easy for readers to subscribe to her blog.
  18. Makes it easy for readers to share her posts with other people who might need them.
  19. Understands that marketing is also a form of service. It helps people who need her blog to find it.
  20. Knows how much to give, to receive, and to keep for herself.
What do you think it means to be a generous blogger? Why, or why isn't it important to be generous online?

  1. I love the expression "make your heart sing" -- and anything that has that effect on anyone. That is exactly the standard to which I try to hold the writing and photography I share on the web (challenging as it is sometimes...) Thank you for these heartfelt, insightful, helpful guidelines.

  3. Britt- you are a very generous person, in addition to being a generous blogger! I am probably out of it, but what is "link love?" Is that "liking" others blogs on Facebook?

  4. What a great list - I love the spirit of it. Thanks for the inspiration, as always. And a belated thank you for the shout-out that you gave to our Party of 4 blog in your recent post about unplugging! You ARE a generous blogger.

  5. Ms. Colwell (: I should have clarified that. "Link love" is when you write a post that links back to other blogs. Like this:

  12. it has something to do with increasing the trust between people. Open-handed, open-hearted giving is providing more life to the reader than they would otherwise have, if they trust. And they won't, can't, if the blogger isn't motivated by desire for causing a joining of experience- aka teaching? and by teaching, learning? A meeting of the minds that becomes part of the collective experience, an so timely now with so many people to keep within the collective!

  15. Hey Britt,

I work for a non-profit that offers another route to being a generous blogger: volunteering to write your own posts, or attempt guest blog posts, on behalf of non-profits you like. What do you think?

It's called Media Cause (get it? Media for a cause . . .). And we always need more volunteers in our blogging and social media sections. I'd LOVE it if you could check us out (Mediacause.org) - and if you're interested maybe do a post about us? I mean, you have such a wonderfully written and well read blog - and it's about doing good. And that's also what Media Cause is about . . . Anyways, thought you'd be interested. Love your blog.

    Best,
    Jenny

  19. I helped mentor a new blogger which was a very rewarding experience. She seemed to be grateful and blogging has filled a real void in her life. I wish she'd read your list before she left a *very* mean-spirited comment on my blog that ended our friendship. I don't think she would have said to my face what she said in a comment, but I could be wrong. It's important for us to be good guests as well as good hosts.
