Your Feedback Requested on The Have Fun Do Good Guide

Hello Have Fun Do Gooders!

One of my 2010 New Year's resolutions is to complete either a book proposal, or a self-published e-book that I am tentatively titling, The Have Fun Do Good Guide.

You have no idea how scary it is for me to share that with you. Yikes!

Anyway, I am writing The Have Fun Do Good Guide because:

1. I've always wanted to write a book.
2. I want to explore how to add more having fun and doing good into my own life.
3. I want to share stories, ideas and resources that are inspiring and useful to other people.

I have my own ideas about what I would like to include in the book, but I *really* want to hear about the kinds of things you would like to read about in The Have Fun Do Good Guide.

If you feel shy about leaving a comment, feel free to email me at britt AT brittbravo DOT com.

Thanks for your help!

  1. Britt - congrats on taking the big step and communicating your goals so openly with the community! Not only do I completely support that action, but I'm wholly looking forward to the product that emerges :)

For me, I feel like you and others have created really great ways for me to learn and discover light weight and adoptable "things" I can do to make a difference while still having fun. What I would be most interested in from a book (maybe one of the chapters for example) is going that next level higher: changing processes in my life to have a good time living while also increasing my impact.

    Just food for thought :)

  2. Thanks for your rapid response and encouragement, Amy!

Can you explain a little more about what you mean by, "changing processes in my life to have a good time living while also increasing my impact"?

What a fantastic goal! I think a book or e-book is a wonderful idea.

What I would like to see are ideas for having fun and doing good for those of us who have other challenges or constraints to deal with. For example, for some it may simply be time or money constraints. For me, it would be health challenges. I have physical disabilities and a chronic illness that make it difficult to leave home - but I don't want to be left out, lol!

I do online activism - signing petitions, sending letters etc. I do some medication management and social services advocacy as a volunteer twice each month. In spite of only having my unemployment benefits for income, I still make donations. But most of what I do is in isolation, which really cuts down the fun factor.

  4. How exciting! I'd love family-friendly volunteer and philanthropy opportunities, including for families with young children. We love to do stuff together, and we love to help people (and teach our kids social responsibility), but it's hard to find ideas that will work with our kids and be fun for them, too!

  5. Anonymous - What an important thing to include . . . how everyone can have fun and do good no matter what challenges they face.

It sounds like you are doing *a lot* of good yourself!

Melinda - A number of people have asked for ways to have and fun do good with their family.

I'm married, but don't have any children, so I would have to base my ideas on research, and interviews with other parents. Would the information still interest you if it wasn't based on my firsthand experience?

  6. I LOVE this idea! So happy to see it taking form.

In addition to what has already been mentioned, I would also love to see some facts and figures about the distribution of resources like wealth, clean water, food, etc, in the world,as well as stats on poverty, housing, education access, etc in the USA. (as it relates to your work/vision) I often feel even more inspired to do good and contribute time, money, energy when I am reminded of the stark differences that exist in the world. I could see a chapter that includes this info on "Why Do Good?" in the world doing for Americans what Diet for A New America did for bringing consciousness to how/what we eat.

I would also love to read about human interest stories of experiences of "having Fun and doing good", including how those experiences have changed lives and what deeper life lessons and appreciations came from it.

I also love the emphasis on fun! And would love to see information about why the enjoyment piece is so key-and how that in itself "does good."

  7. Great idea! My husband and I have a $10/20 project. The heart of our project is that small donations of money and/or time can make a powerful and positive impact in the lives of individuals. Our website is tendollarsandtwentyminutes.org. You can contact me at tenandtwenty@gmail.com if you'd like more info.

Wishing you much success with your great idea!

    Best,

  8. I am not a writer in that I struggle slowly and re-edit a simple post many times. When I needed help with my life I began reading self-help, about 30 years ago. It was so useful to me and I underlined and hi-lighted for easy review as I needed it. I also made my own notes.

All this helped me overcome problems as I was continually thinking positively about them. Eventually I put them together in a very short and simple booklet and put them online in 2009. I still review some pages myself now and again and it was such a great idea all around and as a bonus it has turned out to be helpful to many others.

Best of luck with your project Britt, it looks like a sure thing from here.

    Hi Britt,
I look forward to seeing the progress on your new project!

I have some images that might be interesting to you.....

My campers are making and donating their artwork to give to the Alameda Animal Shelter. They chose Taking Care of Pets as their message.

It's fun for all involved to see the Animal Shelter filled with bright picture by children.
