Last month I had a dream where I taught a woman the four secrets to happiness:
- Cook for yourself, and for others.
- Connect with yourself, and with others.
- Care for yourself, and for others.
- Color. Have a lot of color in your life.
Without realizing it, I'd accepted the belief that to be a nurturing female is not valuable.
Yuck.
Not a pretty thing to recognize in yourself.
Slowly, I'm coming to realize how important being a nurturing person is. I mean, where would we be without nurturers like parents, grandparents, teachers, farmers, cooks, counselors, health care workers and healers?
How do you feel about your role as a nurturer?

Love the post. Connecting and caring is what makes the world a happy place!
ReplyDeleteHi Jenna ~ I'm so glad you liked it. Thanks for reading!
ReplyDeleteMy role of being a nurturer? Well, as jai ma of the nurturing world, there are lots of things I could say about this powerful dream and post. 1. I have always been immersed in the role of nurturer, including being a mother, on many levels to many people...I have cherished it, resented it, resisted it, undervalued it and more recently celebrated it and accepted it as one of my natural skill sets. 2. What I find even more potent however is how few people truly know how to deeply nurture themselves (even before others). This is a true art,and one that is not really encouraged in our culture. I am still refining the art of true self nurturance. I LOVE that "yourself" comes first in each of the invitations of your dream. I love that it is being told to a woman, as the feminine so often is expected to nurture yet somehow not necessarily included in the nurturing. Juicy topic. Timely. You should write a book about it! Interviews, activities, "recipes" for a nurtured life of Cooking, Caring, Conneciton and Color = ) Just sayin.
ReplyDeleteGabriela ~
ReplyDeleteDo you know of any cultures where self-nurturing is encouraged?
I'm also interested in how to integrate "feminine" nurturing qualities with "masculine" leadership qualities.
Just started reading Moonrise: The Power of Women Leading from the Heart by Nina Simons, which I think will provide some insight and answers.
