13 Tips for Mobilizing Online Action

On Monday night I went to a great event, Money, Mobs, and Media: Mobilizing Action for Change, presented by The Hub Bay Area. The panelists were Matt Flannery of Kiva.org, Steve Newcomb of Virgance, and Ben Rattray of Change.org. Regina Connell of SaltCellar moderated.

Below are some of the tips the panelists shared for how to get folks engaged for change online:

  1. Give instant, bite-sized feedback.
  2. Create an addictive experience.
  3. Help people feel powerful.
  4. Be honest.
  5. Be passionate.
  6. Be transparent.
  7. Provide opportunities that create measurable change.
  8. Involve a lot of people.
  9. Use the carrot.
  10. Use the stick.
  11. Focus on quality content and community, not on the technology.
  12. Make people feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves.
  13. Facilitate peer-to-peer referrals.
I highly recommend you watch the video on BusinessBoomer. It's long, over 90 minutes, but you could listen to it in the background while you're doing something else. I've also posted the video at the end of the post. (Note: the audio in the beginning is scratchy, but it gets better).

    Hey Britt,

Thanks for the shout out - and great list you have here! I didn't take as many notes as I would have liked, but I think your post captured the essence of the event quite well. Maybe I'll see you at the SoCap conference?

    Cheers,
    Tony
